The structure and refinement of a Pomerol red wine

The estate

The Château Petit-Village is located in the heart of the Pomerol appellation, on the right bank of Bordeaux. Founded in 1780, this château has been owned by the Moulin family, majority owners of Château Beauregard, since the beginning of 2020.

The vineyard

Château Petit-Village oversees a historic vineyard of 10.5 hectares in one piece. This triangular-shaped vineyard is located on a clayey gravel soil at the highest point of the oldest terrace of Pomerol. The vines are on average 35 years old. 2020 marks the year of certification of the entire vineyard in Organic Agriculture.

 The wine

Resulting from a rigorous intra-parcel selection on 4.5 hectares of vines located at the highest point of the vineyard, this Château Petit-Village 2020 excellently expresses the potential and typicity of the greatest clayey terroirs of Pomerol.

The vintage

The winter and spring are marked by mild conditions combined with heavy rainfall. Bud break is early. The hot and dry summer is punctuated by heatwave episodes followed by storms.

Vinification and aging

A rigorous selection and successive sorting are carried out manually in the plot, mechanically under the destemmer and manually on the final sorting table. After the harvest, the grapes are placed in a cold room (6°C). Parcel vinifications are carried out in small thermoregulated concrete vats. Pre-fermentation cold maceration then alcoholic fermentation. Malolactic fermentation takes place in new barrels for the best merlot vats. The aging lasts 16 months in barrels (50% of which are new) and partly in amphora.

Blend

Merlot (60%), cabernet franc (32%) and cabernet sauvignon (8%). The parcel selection carried out for the elaboration of this vintage results in an atypical blend including the highest percentage of cabernet in the history of the estate.
