Location and surface area of the Château La Pointe vineyard
Regarded as one of the oldest properties in Pomerol, Château La Pointe watches over a 23-hectare vineyard. Within the appellation, Château La Pointe is one of the oldest properties and one of the largest vineyards.
The property's uniqueness lies in its mosaic of soils, which provide these right-bank wines with a pleasant finesse and quality that have been unanimously recognised since the 19th century.
What is the history of Château La Pointe?
Unanimous recognition since the 19th century
"After great improvements in the vineyard (...) its wines, once considered as second growths, have been sold as first growths for nearly ten years". This is the presentation of Château La Pointe in the 1868 edition of the Bordeaux wine guide "Cocks et Féret".
Poised alongside illustrious Pomerol wines (Beauregard, Clinet, Conseillante, L'Évangile, Gazin, Nénin, Petit Village, Rouget, Trotanoy) in this well-known guide, La Pointe was one of the first properties to be able to call itself a "château".
High-quality wines swiftly recognised internationally
As early as 1882, the wines of Château La Pointe were rewarded for their quality. This was the case with a silver medal at the Bordeaux Exhibition in 1882 and at the Universal Exhibition in Amsterdam in 1883.
A new era from the beginning of the 21st century
In 2007, the insurance company Generali France acquired Château La Pointe.
Under the direction of Eric Monneret, an agricultural engineer, the estate has undertaken major work since 2008, both in the vineyard and on the winemaking facilities, in order to express the full potential of this great terroir and to be as close as possible to the environmental challenges. Hubert de Boüard de Laforest, co-owner of Château Angélus - and internationally renowned wine consultant - is now sharing his experience with the estate's team.
All there is to know about the terroir of Château La Pointe
Location and exposure
Château La Pointe is located on the top of the second terrace of the Pomerol appellation.
Geology: a unique terroir resting on a mosaic of soils
The estate's vineyards are planted on soils of alluvial origin (sand, gravel and pebbles) and sedimentary origin (gravel, sandy clay and clay).
A thorough study of the entire vineyard carried out from 2018 onwards has made it possible to establish a precise and quality-oriented parcel-based management of this exceptional terroir.
Climate: vines under a maritime influence
The Pomerol appellation benefits from a maritime climate, resulting in relatively cool summers and cold winters.
Growing practices
For many years, the vineyards have been cultivated in a sustainable manner and are now perfectly in line with a philosophy based on numerous environmental issues.
In a continuous search for excellence, the teams at Château La Pointe pay rigorous attention to the vineyard, through practices such as adapted working of the soil, the maintenance of plant cover, the preservation of biodiversity and eco-grazing. The estate's vineyard is now certified as High Environmental Value and ISO 14001.
Vinification
The renovation of the winery in 2009 and 2018 has enabled the estate to carry out, in the continuity of the parcel-based approach instilled in the management of the vineyard, very precise vinifications as well as gentle extractions in small concrete vats. Subsequently, the mastery of barrel ageing ensures an authentic and refined expression of the grape varieties that make up the blend, namely Merlot and Cabernet Franc.
