Founded in 1782, Domaine Henri Rebourseau is one of the most respected names on the Côte de Nuits. Present in 9 Burgundy appellations, Domaine Henri Rebourseau is one of the largest estates in terms of surface area of Grand Crus owned in the Côte de Nuits.
Jean de Surrel took over the reins of the estate in 1981, introducing organic viticulture and biodynamic practices. Since 2006, no synthetic products have been used on the estate. Certain biodynamic practices, such as the 500 and 501 preparations and genodics (using music to boost plant development), are also at the heart of the growing practices, which even go beyond the organic specifications, with the use of sulphur well below the legal limit. Today, it's up to the 6th generation of the family, represented by Bénigne de Surrel and Louis de Surrel, to ensure the continuity of the estate. In 2019, the Bouygues family became the majority shareholder in the estate.
Domaine Henri Rebourseau looks after a heritage of exceptional vines planted on land that has been cultivated for over 1,400 years. In the heart of the Côte de Nuits, the estate owns the oldest plots between the villages of Gevrey-Chambertin and Vougeot. The vineyard is made up of 13.6 hectares planted with pinot noir grapes under various appellations: Grand Crus (Chambertin, Mazy-Chambertin, Charmes-Chambertin, Clos de Vougeot), Premier Crus (Gevrey Chambertin La Perrière and Fonteny) and two Villages appellations (Gevrey-Chambertin aux Corvées and la Brunelle).
For Domaine Henri Rebourseau, each appellation must be brought to its best level. There is no such thing as a Rebourseau taste. In each cuvée, the quality advocated is that of the climat that forms the core of the wine's identity. Respect for the land that has been cultivated for centuries means respecting the terroir and the work of the old winegrowers. The plots of vines are monitored and cared for daily using 100% organic viticulture and biodynamic techniques. In the cellars, every effort is made to treat the Pinot Noir with all the delicacy it requires. No racking is carried out, the grapes are lightly infused and left as intact as possible before vatting.
For Jean de Surrel, the family maxim that "the most astonishing art of wine is the art of ageing" acts as a guiding principle throughout the making of Domaine Henri Rebourseau wines. In the estate's century-old cellars, the art of ageing is used to enhance and reveal the full potential of the wines that will reveal their secrets a few years later.
A pure expression of Burgundy's great climats, Domaine Henri Rebourseau wines have ageing potential ranging from around 10 years for the villages to over 20 years for the grand crus, and even much longer depending on the vintage.
