A fine red Pomerol wine from a challenging vintage

The estate

The vineyard of Château La Pointe covers 23 hectares and is planted on a tapestry of gravel and pebble soils, clay and gravel soils and sandy soils upon clay or gravel, giving the estate’s wines a unique and delicate style. Working with Hubert de Boüard de Laforest, co-owner of Château Angélus, the estate’s team has been working on shifting the growing practices since 2008 in order to express the full potential of this Pomerol reference.

The vintage

With its unpredictable weather conditions, the estate’s teams were under a lot of stress throughout 2021. Nevertheless, they were eager to find the right balance between the vines' cultural needs and the estate's environmental commitments. The winemakers had to show great dedication, even at weekends, to bring in yields that were expected to be small from the beginning of the summer, following a major episode of coulure.

A late vintage, in contrast to previous very sunny ones, 2021 required patience to attain maturity. Harvesting began on September 27th with the Merlot grapes and continued until October 13th for the harvesting of the last Cabernet Francs grapes.

Vinification and ageing

Following a rigorous sorting in the vineyard and then in the cellar to ensure complete and homogeneous ripeness, the challenge throughout the vinification process lay in finding the right balance to encourage gentle extractions and reveal the finesse of the tannins along with the elegance of the aromatic bouquet.

The blend

Château La Pointe 2020 comprises a blend of Merlot (82%) and Cabernet Franc (18%).
