Description

The aromatic expression and finesse of a red wine from Pomerol

The estate

Located in the heart of Libourne, Château Mazeyres is an iconic property of the Pomerol appellation, on the right bank of Bordeaux. The estate boasts ancient origins, dating back to Roman times. Since 1992, Alain Moueix has been managing Château Mazeyres with great talent and passion, applying to his wines a great expertise and know-how.

The vineyard

Château Mazeyres 2021 is a Pomerol wine that stems from a 23.57-hectare vineyard located in the heart of the appellation. The vines have been cultivated biodynamically since 2012 with the Biodyvin certification by Ecocert since 2018. The Château Mazeyres vineyard is located on the western and southern terraces of the appellation, on 3 different types of soil: fine clay, clayey sand and gravelly-sandy clay. The unique nature of these soils gives the wines of Château Mazeyres a unique personality and a velvety mouthfeel.

The vintage

A mild and wet winter favoured an early and homogeneous bud break. The particularly cold and dry spring was punctuated by a major frost episode on April 7th, which decimated 25% of yields. Thereafter, until the end of April, the cool weather slowed down the vegetative development. Rainfall in May, followed by unstable stormy conditions from mid-June to mid-July, caused strong mildew pressure that lasted until the end of the veraison stage. Despite low yields, the harvest began on the earliest terroirs on September 28th and produced rich, aromatic grapes.

Vinification and ageing

38% of the wine is aged in barrels (22% of which are new), 27% in 7 hl ovoid concrete vats, 15% in amphorae and small vats and 20% in tuns.

The blend

Château Mazeyres 2021 comprises a blend of Merlot (75%), Cabernet Franc (22%) and Petit Verdot (3%).
