A great Pomerol combining power and elegance
The property
Château Beauregard, located in Pomerol, Bordeaux, has a history dating back to the 12th century, marked by the Knights Hospitaller. The property extends over 17.5 hectares of unique terroir, composed of gravel, clay, and sand. Since 2014, the Moulin and Cathiard families have been running the château, implementing a transition to organic farming under the supervision of Vincent Priou.
The vineyard
This Pomerol wine comes from a 17.5-hectare terroir, resting on clayey gravels on the southeast edge of the famous plateau. The vines, averaging 35 years old, benefit from an exceptional terroir certified in organic farming.
The vintage
The first six months of 2016 were marked by heavy rainfall and mild winter temperatures leading to early bud break. However, the cooler temperatures of the following months slow down the phenology, while the humidity promotes high mildew pressure. Thanks to rigorous prophylaxis and appropriate treatments, the vineyard goes through this period without notable damage.
From July, an intense drought sets in, accompanied by high summer temperatures in August and September, creating a water stress favorable to the quality of the grapes. Rain in early September aids the maturation of the young vines and benefits the entire vineyard.
Late harvests, benefiting from an Indian summer in October, offer grapes of homogeneous maturity. The vinification, focused on purity and elegance, reveals an exceptional 2016 vintage, rewarding the meticulous work carried out throughout the year.
Vinification and aging
Manual harvest with parcel sorting. The vinification is carried out in 22 truncated concrete vats with alcoholic fermentation between 26° and 30°C. Maceration lasts 3 to 5 weeks. Malolactic fermentation is carried out in new barrels for some batches of merlot and cabernet franc. The aging continues for 18 months with 60% new barrels.
Blend
Merlot (75%), cabernet franc (25%)
