Description
The aromatic intensity and delicate touch of a rosé champagne
The estate
Established for nearly five centuries in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, the Philipponnat Champagne House is one of the historic names of the Champagne region. Singularity, excellence, generosity and simplicity are the values that guide this house which maintains its family-owned spirit. Owned by the house since 1935, the legendary Clos des Goisses is one of the oldest and most prestigious clos (walled vineyard) in the Champagne region. This jewel is the source of rare and exceptionally powerful champagnes.
Philipponnat looks after exceptional vineyards of 20 hectares of Premiers and Grands Crus in Champagne, located in Aÿ, Mareuil-sur-Aÿ and Avenay.
The vineyard
The name of the Cuvée 1522 Grand Cru de Philipponnat refers to the date when the Philipponnat family settled in Champagne in the village of Ay. This cuvée comes from the estate’s finest vineyards, notably from the historic "Léon" plots in Ay.
The vintage
A mild, rainy winter preceded a perfect spring with dry, warm and sunny conditions that advanced an early budding of the vines. The summer was particularly wet and cool, especially at the end of August. Despite this unstable climate, the health of the vineyard was satisfactory and the grapes harvested and carefully sorted were of high quality.
Winemaking and ageing
Made from the house’s finest vineyards, this exceptional cuvée was partly vinified in wood without malolactic fermentation to preserve its freshness and develop its complexity. The addition of a Pinot Noir wine from Clos des Goisses to the original blend gives the wine its pink colour. Aged for eight years, this champagne is a refined expression of the minerality, freshness and balance of the greatest Champagne terroirs. This Extra Brut Champagne is dosed at 4.25 gr/litre. The 8 years of ageing in the underground cellars of the house gives an exceptional freshness.
Blend
Pinot Noir (82%) from the historic "Léon" vineyards in Ay, Mailly and Verzy; Chardonnay (17%) from Verzy.
This blend was finished with an 8% addition of vinified Pinot Noir from the vineyards of Mareuil-sur-Ay.
