Description
A fine Italian Brunello di Montalcino wine that combines power and delicacy
The estate
Regarded as a pioneer in the art of Italian winemaking, Castello Banfi is a family-owned estate in the Tuscany region of Italy. The estate also has properties in the Piedmont region, Principessa Gavia and Vigne Regali. The Banfi family has always worked with the greatest respect for traditions. Over the years, the estate has gained a worldwide recognition for its dedication to the art of winemaking and its excellence in doing so. Banfi is one of the pioneers regarding the research into cloning the Sangiovese grape variety, always with the aim of producing an exceptional Brunello di Montalcino.
The vineyard
Castello Banfi's 2016 Poggio alle Mura stems from vineyards that descend from the historic castle of Poggio alle Mura and along a slope that is ideal for growing Brunello Sangiovese. The vines have been rooted on a hillside at an altitude of 210-220 metres since 1992. The soil is influenced by limestone and sand, and is filled with rounded rocks.
Vinification and ageing
Once the grapes have been harvested, they macerate for 12 to 13 days. Alcoholic fermentation is carried out in stainless steel and wooden vats. The 2-year ageing period in French (90%) and Slavonian (10%) oak barrels is completed by an additional 12 months of bottle ageing to give the wine its unique aromatic character.
