Description

The balance and intensity of an Italian red wine from Brunello di Montalcino

The estate

Considered a forerunner in the art of Italian winemaking, Castello Banfi is a family-run estate in the heart of the Tuscany region. The Italian estate also owns properties in Piedmont, Principessa Gavia and Vigne Regali. The Banfi family has always worked with great respect for tradition. Over the years, they have earned a worldwide reputation for their dedication and excellence. Banfi is one of the founders of research into the cloning of the Sangiovese grape variety, always with the aim of producing great Tuscan wines.

The vineyard

Castello Banfi's 2017 Poggio alle Mura is a Tuscan wine made from vineyards that descend from the historic castle of Poggio alle Mura, along a slope ideal for growing Sangiovese. Since 1992, the vines have taken root on a hillside at an altitude of 210-220 metres. Here, the soil, influenced by limestone and sand, abounds in rounded rocks.

Winemaking and ageing

The harvested grapes are macerated for 12 to 13 days. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless steel and wooden vats. The wine is aged for 2 years in French oak barrels (90%) and Slavonian oak barrels (10%), followed by a further 12 months in bottle before being released on the market, to enhance the distinctive aromatic character of this Brunello di Montalcino wine.
