Description
The structure and balance of a red wine from Tuscany
The estate
An essential reference for great wines from Tuscany located between Livorno and Grosseto, the Domain Tenuta San Guido was born from the marriage between Marquis Mario Incisa della Rocchetta and Clarice della Gherardesca. In 1942, Mario decided to plant cabernet sauvignon vines in this region of Tuscany, thus marking the birth of Sassicaia a few years later. In 1983, Tenuta San Guido became the first estate in Italy to be awarded its own appellation with the consecration of the DOC Bolgheri.
The vineyard
Produced since 2002, Le Difese from Tenuta San Guido is a wine from Tuscany made from vineyards planted on a mosaic of soils composed of limestone, stones, pebbles and partially clay. Located between 100 and 300 meters in altitude, these vines are exposed west/south-west.
The vintage
The winter alternated between mild and intense cold, with rain and snow at altitude. The spring experienced variable temperatures, without negative consequences, and a rainy May favorable to flowering. The summer, hot and dry, was well tolerated thanks to water reserves. A saving rain at the end of August allowed for optimal ripening of the grapes, offering exceptional quality, with beautiful concentration, rich aromatic extraction and a strong presence of anthocyanins.
Vinification and aging
Harvested by hand, the grapes undergo manual sorting. Fermentation in stainless steel tanks. Short aging in French oak barrels of two and three wines before an additional three months of aging in bottles before the wine is marketed.
Blend
Le Difese 2023 from Tenuta San Guido is the result of a blend of cabernet sauvignon and sangiovese.
