The property
The Tenuta San Guido, located between Livorno and Grosseto on the Tyrrhenian coast, is where Marquis Mario Incisa della Rocchetta and his wife realized their dream of producing a great Bolgheri wine in the 1940s. By introducing cabernet sauvignon in place of traditional grape varieties, they gave birth to the legendary Sassicaia, one of the most prestigious crus worldwide.
The vineyard
The vineyard of Tenuta San Guido extends over the coastal hills of Tuscany, benefiting from a Mediterranean climate and a soil rich in limestone and clay. The Guidalberto cuvée comes from a plot located near the Sassicaia vineyard, benefiting from a southern exposure and a soil rich in pebbles.
The vintage
Autumn 2022 was marked by above-average temperatures and rains at the end of November, replenishing water reserves. The cold and wet winter lasted until the end of February. Bud break occurred at the end of March under good conditions. In early April, a significant cooling led to preventive measures against frost, which was ultimately avoided. Rainy, the month of May slightly reduced production (4–5%) but favored denser clusters. Despite the high temperatures in July and late August, the vines remained healthy, producing balanced grapes with remarkable maturity and texture.
Vinification and aging
Fermentation in stainless steel tanks. The aging lasted about 12 months in 225 L barrels (mainly French), of which 40% were new, 35% of one wine, and 25% of two to three wines, ensuring a good balance between tannic structure and aromatic expression. A short bottle aging precedes the marketing of this wine.
Blend
The Guidalberto 2023 is a red wine made from a blend of cabernet sauvignon (55%) and merlot (45%).
