Description
Rich and complex, discover the finesse of this historic Super Tuscan
The estate
In the heart of Tuscany, nestled between the green hills of Chianti and the magnificent panorama of the Crete Senesi, lies an unmissable reference point on the Italian scene: the Tenuta San Felice. A true historical monument, the bishops of Arezzo and Siena were already fighting over the famous Tuscan vineyard in 714. Today, with over 150 hectares of vineyards, the legend continues thanks to the estate's unique philosophy: a quest for excellence and continuous improvement.
San Felice is also a great diversity of terroirs spread over three of Tuscany's leading appellations: Chianti Classico, Montalcino and Bolgheri. For decades, this estate has succeeded in maintaining the perfect balance between tradition and renewal, a signature that can be found at the heart of their creations.
The wine
First made in 1968, Vigorello was the first of a new generation of Tuscan wines, now known as "Super Tuscans." The blend also includes Pugnitello, an ancient indigenous grape variety brought back to life by San Felice, to accentuate the authentic character of this historic wine.
The vintage
The winter of 2019 was marked by heavy rain and snowfall, creating greater water reserves. The mild spring temperatures advanced an early budburst in April and the high summer temperatures allowed the grapes to reach optimal ripeness quickly.
Winemaking and ageing
The Merlot was harvested in the second week of September and the Cabernet Sauvignon, Pugnitello and Petit Verdot were picked in the first week of October. Following a 20-25 day fermentation, followed by malolactic fermentation, the wines were aged for 24 months in 225 litre French oak barrels. Finally, the wine was aged for a further 8 months in the bottle before being released on the market.
