Description
A complex and delicate Tuscan wine
The estate
San Felice is an estate in Tuscany, Italy, that is driven by the constant evolution of its know-how and expertise. This estate has successfully highlighted its terroir through the typicity of its wines for decades.
The vineyard
San Felice's 2018 Pugnitello is a Tuscan wine that stems from vineyards located in the villages of Castelnuovo Berardenga and Siena. The vines are planted on soils composed of limestone and galestro, a mixture of pebbles and gravel.
The wine
The name of this wine, "Pugnitello", refers to an ancient Tuscan grape variety. Following the rediscovery of this long-forgotten varietal, the universities of Florence and Pisa have collaboratively studied this variety for many years, as part of an experiment to protect indigenous Tuscan varieties. This variety gives rise to wines that are seductive in their smoothness, mellowness and concentration.
The vintage
2018 was a year marked by an early vegetative development, due to high temperatures in March-April followed by heavy rainfall. The summer months were hot and dry. The alternation between sunny days and cool nights in September are ideal and ensured an optimal ripening of the grapes.
Vinification and ageing
Harvesting during the first week of October. Maceration for 20 to 25 days. Alcoholic fermentation and malolactic fermentation. Aged for 18 to 20 months in 225-litre French oak barrels, then 8 months in bottle.
The blend
Pugnitello (100%).
