Description
A complex and structured Tuscan red wine
The estate
The Rocca di Frassinello estate stems from the alliance between the highly reputed Chianti Classico estate, Castellare di Castellina, and the Domaines Barons de Rothschild Château Lafite. Opened in 2007 and designed by the famous Italian architect, Renzo Piano, Rocca di Frassinello produces fine Maremma Toscana wines.
The vineyard
The Baffonero vineyard enjoys an excellent north/south-west sun exposure and a very pleasant ventilation, which moderates the temperatures between night and day, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly while developing their aromatic expression and maintaining a good level of acidity. The soils of the Baffonero vineyard are mainly composed of clay schist and allow for an excellent drainage all while limiting the yields of the vines. These conditions result in exceptionally aromatic and concentrated grapes and a beautiful tannic structure.
The wine
A 100% Merlot Grand Cru by Rocca di Frassinello, Baffonero is made from the eponymous 3.5-hectare vineyard in the Gavorrano area. This vineyard is known as one of the first to be planted within the Rocca di Frassinello estate, with Merlot clones from Château Lafite-Rothschild (Pauillac).
The vintage
A rainy winter preceded a cool spring that delayed budburst. The mild conditions during the summer months made up for the delay and enabled the grapes to ripen beautifully. The temperature variations between day and night led to the grape’s optimal concentration while preserving a good level of acidity. Harvesting took place during the first half of September and resulted in a structured and particularly fresh vintage.
Vinification and ageing
Vinification in concrete vats. Malolactic fermentation. Aged for 14 months in new oak barrels (100%) followed by 12 months of bottle-ageing.
The blend
Merlot (100%).
