Roquette & Cazes is the product of a meeting between two friends and the combination of the know-how of the latter to achieve a common dream. Jorge Roquette, from Quinta do Crasto in Portugal, and Jean-Michel Cazes, from Château Lynch-Bages, combined their talents to produce very fine wines. This union gave rise to wines marked by the particular features of the Douro Valley and the typical style of Bordeaux from the Cazes family, which has been established on the Pauillac appellation for nearly a century.
The will and passion of the two owners made it possible to take up a major challenge: conforming to the typicalities of Douro through the work of two teams speaking different languages and who were established nearly 1000km from one another. Their first Xisto–Roquette & Cazes wine was met with immediate success and was quickly welcomed by international critics.
To the surprise of great wine enthusiasts, Roquette & Cazes lies on the Douro Valley, an exceptional terroir. There, steep slopes accommodate vines down to the depths of the valley, following the course of the river Douro. The schist- and granite-based soils nourish the terraced vines, giving the wines an intense aromatic expression.
It is on this fine terroir, covered by 114 hectares of the Quinta da Cabreira, where the region’s traditional grape varieties are planted: touriga nacional, tinta roriz and touriga franca. For his part, Jean-Michel Cazes acquired 42 hectares of land in Quinta do Meco, benefitting from an ideal exposure to the east and the north, allowing for the freshness and acidity of the grapes to be maintained.
The meeting between this fabulous terroir and rich know-how of Roquette & Cazes offers wines that purely express the Douro appellation, bearing the signature style of these two great houses with much character.
