The prestige of the Hungarian Oremus estate dates back to the 1630s, when Maté Szepsi Lacko made the first “Tokaj dripping wine” from the grapes grown in the Oremus vineyard. He then offered it to the wife of the Prince of Transylvania, Princess Susana Lorántffy, to thank her for her care towards the inhabitants of Tokaj. A century later, Oremus has already established itself as one of the most renowned estates in the world.
Today, Oremus is one of those estates which, by merging with the illustrious Spanish estate Vega Sicilia, have embraced its philosophy and even magnified it. Thus, in this Hungarian vineyard the continuous pursuit of excellence, harmony with nature, and careful work are essential.
The Oremus vineyard is located in the heart of Tokaj, a region of Hungary famous for its warm and misty autumns which provide ideal conditions for the development of noble rot. The vines are rooted along the banks of the Bodrog River and in the foothills of the Zemplén mountains. Six different grape varieties are grown there: Furmint, which covers nearly half of the wine-growing area, Sárga Muskotály (Muscat Jaune), Hárslevelü, Zéta, and two grape varieties that honour tradition, Kövérszölö and Gohér. In 2002, UNESCO recognized the exceptional wine-growing conditions of the region, and classified Tokaj as a world heritage site.
The meeting between this authentic terroir and the legendary Vega Sicilia shows itself in fabled wines. The Tokaj from Oremus are very finely crafted by András Bacsó and then age for a long time in barrels and bottles. The result is varied wines, from dry to sweet, both powerful and structured with a very long aging potential.
