Description

A fine Tokaj wine, expressive and refined

The estate

Oremus is one of those estates which, by merging with the illustrious Spanish estate Vega Sicilia, have embraced and enhanced its philosophy. Thus, in this prestigious Hungarian vineyard, a quest is constantly under way: for excellence, harmony with nature, and rigour. The prestige of this estate dates back to the 1630s, when Maté Szepsi Lacko made the first "Tokaj wine with tears" from the grapes grown in the Oremus vineyard. He gifted it to the wife of the Prince of Transylvania, Princess Susana Lorántffy, to thank her the kindness she had shown the people of Tokaj. A century later, Oremus has already established itself as one of the world's most renowned estates.

The vineyard

The Oremus estate watches over a 115-hectare vineyard spread over steep hills, whose different sun exposures enable the local grape varieties (Furmint, Harslevelü, Zéta and Sárgamuskotály) to reach optimum levels of ripeness.

The wine

Meaning "tear-shaped wine", Aszú wines are produced exclusively following great years, that encompass the ideal conditions leading to the development of Botrytis.

Oremus' Tokaji Aszú 5 Puttonyos 2014 stems from vines that are 19 years old on average, rooted in a gravelly, clayey subsoil coated with a fine silt.

The sweetness of this wine is 137 g/litre.

The vinification and ageing

The grapes are harvested by hand, following successive selections in order to select the best quality grapes. In line with the traditional Hungarian winemaking practices, this wine is made by adding three 25 kg baskets ("puttonyos") of botrytised grapes to a barrel of unfermented must. The grapes are macerated, swell to the optimum size and are then gently pressed. Slow fermentation in new Hungarian barrels for around four weeks. The wine is aged in 136 and 200 litre barrels for two to three years, followed by a further year in the bottle.

The blend

Oremus Tokaji Aszú 5 Puttonyos 2014 comprises a blend of Furmint, Hárslevelü, Zéta and Sárgamuskotály.
