Mastroberardino was founded in 1878. Since then, 11 generations of the same family have run the business, driven by their passion for the vine and the winemaking history of Campania. The Atripada winery in the province of Avellino in Campania, dating from the 7th century, is a testimony to the wine history of this region. Symbols of great tradition and ancestral know-how, these cellars have been the home base of the Mastroberardino family since the creation of the property in the 19th century.
Angelo Mastroberardino is often nicknamed "the archaeologist of the vine" because of his life-long work in ampelography, the identification and preservation of native grape varieties of Italy, such as Fiano and Greco di Tufo. This prestigious estate, dedicated to preserving the wine-growing heritage of the region, is a pioneer of modern Irpinia viticulture. A leader in the region, the estate single-handedly produced almost half of the wines of Campania in the 1940’s.
The strength of Mastroberardino lies in its ability to highlight the diversity of the Campania terroir and the characteristics of its ancient indigenous grape varieties. It is in this mountainous area of Irpinia that the Mastroberardino estate cultivates its vines of Fiano di Avellino, Piedirosso, Falanghina, Setaire, Aglianico and Greco di Tufo. These exceptional vines are planted in a mosaic of soils, sometimes clay-limestone, volcanic or even sand soils.
Following ancestral Italian traditions, all of the 350 hectares of vineyards, spread over the different areas of the estate, are cared for manually. Along with several other Italian winegrowers who wish to preserve Italian wine heritage, Mastroberardino holds two certifications: VIVA Sustainable Wine and ISO 9000: 2008, which has to do with managing quality control.
The wines of Mastroberardino are local wines, expressing the authenticity of Campania by combining tradition and modernity. They capture the quintessence of the grape varieties from which they are made. Their reds, like the flagship Radici and the Villa de Misteri, are quite powerful with great ageing potential.
