Beaumont Family Wines' location and surface area
Beaumont Family Wines is a family-owned winery located in Bot River, South Africa.
What is the history of Beaumont Family Wines?
A history of winemaking dating back to the 1970s
In 1974, Jayne and Raoul Beaumont acquired a farm built in the 1700s by Dutch settlers and started to plant vines on the surrounding land.
By the end of the 1970s, the couple had produced their first wines under the name Compagnes Drift. The labels of these wines, produced in limited quantities, are hand-drawn by Jayne Beaumont.
In 1994, Beaumont Family Wines produced the first wine under its own name, Beaumont Pinotage, a grape variety created in 1925 from a mix between Pinot Noir and Cinsault. Since then, the bottles of the entire range of the estate are adorned with a roaring lion, symbolising honour and courage.
A new era from 2005
Having taken over the management of the family estate in 2015, Sebastian carried out a major overhaul of the infrastructure and winemaking methods, as well as a modernisation of the labels for the entire range.
All there is to know about the terroir of Beaumont Family Wines
Location and sun exposure
Beaumont Family Wines is renowned for the quality of its wines stemming from the iconic Western Cape region of South Africa.
The estate reigns over a vineyard composed of numerous grape varieties such as Chenin Blanc and Pinotage but also Sauvignon, Semillon, Chardonnay, Colombar, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, Mourvèdre and Cabernet Franc.
Geology: vineyards planted on a mosaic of soils
The vineyards are planted on soils composed of granite, schist or clay, depending on the plot.
Climate: terroirs marked by unique micro-climates
South Africa has a temperate climate, with mild, wet winters and hot, relatively dry summers.
However, there are many specific micro-climates, such as that of the Bot River appellation, marked by low rainfall, moderate temperatures and a cooling breeze due to the terroir’s proximity to the sea.
Vinification
The estate produces fine South African wines through low intervention winemaking practices and a harmonious combination of traditional techniques, such as the use of natural yeasts, and more modern methods.
