A fresh and elegant second wine from Pessac-Léognan

The producer

Owned by the Bernard family since 1983, the magnificent Domaine de Chevalier is one of the great Classified Growths of Bordeaux. The estate is situated in the heart of the Pessac-Léognan appellation, which is located in a green setting south of Bordeaux. L’Esprit de Chevalier is the second wine of the estate.

The vineyard

Domaine de Chevalier boasts a rare vineyard, comprising 60 hectares of red vines. The vineyard is planted in gravelly soil with clayey-gravelly subsoils. Since 1986, the young vines have been dedicated to ripening the berries that make up the blend of the estate’s second wine, L’Esprit de Chevalier.

Winemaking and ageing

After manual harvests in crates, during which a meticulous sorting occurs in the vineyard, the berries are once again sorted at the cellar both before and after destermming. The grapes are vinified in four vats; one in steel, one in steel-aluminium, one in a conical concrete vat and one in a wooden vat. The ageing takes place for 14 months in barrels, one third of which are new barrels.

Blend

L'Esprit de Chevalier 2019 of Domain de Chevalier is made from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (55%), Merlot (40%) and Petit Verdot (5%).

Tasting

Nose

The nose mixes beautifully fresh fragrances of red and black fruits.

Palate

The L'Esprit de Chevalier Rouge 2019 expresses a dense and elegant palate with intense fruit. The development on the palate highlights a smooth texture that forms a harmonious and greedy ensemble that extends for a long time on a beautiful finish.

Keeping

A superbly successful vintage, the L'Esprit de Chevalier Rouge 2019 can be appreciated at a younger age than the great wine of the estate.
