The structure and complexity of a fine Argentine wine
The property
The adventure of Cheval des Andes began twenty years ago, initiated by Pierre Lurton. It was by combining the know-how of the iconic Château Cheval Blanc led by Pierre Lurton with the terroir of Las Compuertas, located in the Mendoza region, that the idea of creating one of the greatest Argentine wines was born, paying tribute to malbec and the art of Bordeaux blending. Today, Cheval des Andes by Cheval Blanc & Terrazas de Los Andes successfully embodies the ambition of these pioneers who contributed to its birth: to be a grand cru of the Andes with a unique personality.
The vineyard
The vineyard of Cheval des Andes extends over 46 hectares with two complementary terroirs. Located at 1070 meters above sea level, the historic vineyard of Las Compuertas is located on the left bank of the Rio Mendoza. Old malbec vines planted in 1929 bring their richness and complexity, complemented by cabernet sauvignon. To the south, the Altamira vineyard is located at 1150 meters above sea level. In this cooler climate area, 14 hectares of vines are planted with malbec vines dating from 1945. Due to the higher altitude and significant temperature variations between night and day, the grapes have tannins of great finesse with a beautiful freshness and floral notes, thus giving birth to very great Mendoza wines.
Vinification and ageing
Minimal intervention during vinification. The ageing took place 40% in Bordeaux barrels of 225 litres, 30% in 400 litre barrels, and the remaining 30% in 2500 litre vats, half of which were new oak.
