Description

The elegance and richness of a Blanc de Noirs Premier Cru Extra Brut champagne

The producer

Since its creation in 1806, the Roger Coulon Champagne House has advocated a deep respect for the environment. Produced without chemical inputs and according to the precepts of organic farming, the vintages of this house express the finesse and identity of the great terroirs of the Montagne de Reims and the Côte des Blancs.

The vineyard

This Blanc de Noirs Premier Cru Extra Brut 2013 by Roger Coulon is made exclusively from two parcels of old "franc de pied" vines, namely "Limons" in Vrigny (Pinot Noir) and "Linguets" in Gueux (Pinot Meunier) planted in 1959. Located between 100 and 120 metres above sea level on the Montagne de Reims, the emblematic terroir of Champagne, these vineyards are cultivated using organic viticultural and agroforestry methods on soils composed of Thanetian sands.

The vintage

2013 was a year marked by heavy rainfall in the spring, preceding a particularly dry summer and a wet September. Despite these unstable conditions, this vintage exudes an alluring freshness and a great ageing potential.

Vinification and ageing

Natural vinification. Long pressing before a deliberately short settling period in order to preserve the wine and the phenolic compounds. No chaptalisation. Spontaneous alcoholic fermentation with indigenous yeasts in vats at low temperature, followed by natural malolactic fermentation. Aged in vats for 10 months on whole lees and then fine lees. Natural clarification before bottling without fining or filtration. Aged for a minimum of 8 years. This Extra Brut champagne is dosed at 3g/L.

The blend

Roger Coulon's Blanc de Noirs Premier Cru Extra Brut 2013 comprises a blend of Pinot Noir (50%) and Pinot Meunier (50%).
