Description
A powerful and charming Chardonnay wine by Domaine Au Pied du Mont-Chauve
The estate
Daughter of one of the greatest wine-producing families in Burgundy, Francine Picard took over her father’s estate at the end of the 1990s. The Domaine Au Pied du Mont Chauve extends over the communes of Chassagne-Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet and Saint-Aubin, in the heart of the most beautiful climats and terroirs of Burgundy.
Seeking to create a synergy between the land and the wines, Francine Picard cultivates her plots of land based on the principles of biodynamic viticulture and instills her passion and utter care to produce wines that reflect the identity of their terroir. From a vineyard of 110 hectares worked in "agro-ecology", the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes of the Domaine Au Pied du Mont Chauve are renowned for their quality, their precision and their elegance. In May 2019, Antoine Lepetit de la Bigne, a specialist in biodynamic viticulture, joined the estate’s team as the Technical Director.
The vineyard
Located in the centre of the village, the climat from which this Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos Saint Jean 2019 wine is made is one of the oldest in Chassagne. The vines were mostly planted in the 1940s on gentle, south-east facing slopes with very red (iron oxide), light, shallow and stony soils.
The vintage
The 2019 vintage is marked by a hot and dry year with three heatwaves between June and the end of August. Although the quantities were moderate due to the lack of water, the quality was exceptional. The Chardonnay grapes are rich and ripe, yet well-balanced and very fine. 2019 is a great vintage for ripe Pinot Noirs and boasted a great intensity, balance and finesse.
Vinification and ageing
Harvested and sorted by hand, the grapes are pressed whole. With a deep respect for Burgundian tradition, the alcoholic fermentation is carried out in barrels.
The wine is aged for 18 months on its lees, including 10 months in oak (Burgundy barrel).
The blend
Chardonnay (100%).
