The Santa Barbara County area consists of 6 AVAs (American Viticultural Areas): Santa Maria Valley, Santa Rita Hills, Ballard Canyon, Los Olivos District, Santa Ynez Valley and Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara, one of Santa Barbara's newest AVAs.

Many grape varieties are grown in the Santa Barbara County area. While Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are particularly well represented in areas that benefit from an oceanic influence, Rhône and Italian varieties such as Syrah, Roussanne, Mourvèdre, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot are also found.
