Description
The unique expression of an endemic Tuscan grape variety
The estate
In the heart of Tuscany, nestled between the green hills of Chianti and the magnificent panorama of the Crete Senesi, lies an unmissable reference point on the Italian scene: the Tenuta San Felice. A true historical monument, the bishops of Arezzo and Siena were already fighting over the famous Tuscan vineyard in 714. Today, with over 150 hectares of vineyards, the legend continues thanks to the estate's unique philosophy: a quest for excellence and continuous improvement.
San Felice is also a great diversity of terroirs spread over three of Tuscany's leading appellations: Chianti Classico, Montalcino and Bolgheri. For decades, this estate has succeeded in maintaining the perfect balance between tradition and renewal, a signature that can be found at the heart of their creations.
The vineyard
Pugnitello 2019 from San Felice is a Tuscan wine from vineyards located within the municipalities of Castelnuovo Berardenga and Siena. The vines are planted on soils composed of limestone and galestro, a mixture of pebbles and gravel.
The wine
The name "Pugnitello" refers to an ancient Tuscan grape variety. It was rediscovered and studied in collaboration with the universities of Florence and Pisa for many years. Today, this grape variety gives rise to wines that entice with their smoothness, softness and concentration.
The vintage
The winter of 2019 was marked by heavy rain and snowfall, creating greater water reserves. The mild spring temperatures advanced an early budburst in April and the high summer temperatures allowed the grapes to reach optimal ripeness quickly.
Winemaking and ageing
Most of the harvesting took place during the first week of October. Following a 20 to 25 day fermentation, followed by malolactic fermentation, the wines are aged for 18 to 20 months in 225 litre French oak barrels. Finally, the wine is aged for a further 8 months in the bottle before being released on the market.
