Located at the gateway to the Médoc, on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, Château d'Agassac has a rich history dating back to the 13th century, according to historical records. Owned by the Gaillard de Gassac family at the time, the château oversaw an 800-hectare manor.
From the 16th century to the present day, Château d'Agassac has had many owners. In 1792, the Pommiers family planted the first vines and converted the old sheepfold into a wine-making cellar. Marcel Richier, an agronomist who introduced wire trellising for the vines, gave a major boost to the quality of the estate's wines, among the best in Bordeaux.
In 1905, under the direction of the de Floris family, Châteaux Pomiès-Agassac and Ludon were brought together under a common name: Château d'Agassac.
Although the Gasqueton family, who also owned Château Calon-Ségur in Saint-Estèphe, bought the château in 1960, the insurance company Groupama acquired it in 1996. Following this acquisition, major work began on the infrastructure and the château between 1997 and 2002, with the aim of producing great Haut-Médoc wines.
While 2004 saw the Terra Vitis certification of this estate, which is strongly committed to environmental sustainability and was subsequently certified HVE 3, this year also saw the development of the screw cap to replace the cork on all Château d'Argassac bottles.
Winner of several Best Of Wine Tourism International awards and promoted to Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel in 2020, Château d'Argassac has been owned since 2021 by Gérard Jicquel, an entrepreneur from Brittany and founder of the Beautiful Life family group, who has also owned Château Fourcas Dupré (Listrac) since 2019.
