Description
A Complex and Delicate Second Wine from Saint-Émilion
The estate
As a Premier Grand Cru Classé of Saint-Émilion, the Château Figeac embodies the excellence of great Bordeaux wines worldwide. Château Figeac has been owned by the Manoncourt family for over 120 years.
The vineyard
A distinguished reference among the great wines of Saint-Émilion, Château Figeac enjoys an exceptional location, to the west of the appellation, bordering the Pomerol appellation. The estate's vineyard extends over 40 hectares of vines planted on 3 different gravel ridges. Respect for biodiversity, flora and fauna are at the heart of the estate's concerns.
The wine
Produced with the same demand as the Grand Vin, Petit-Figeac is the Second Wine of Château Figeac. Under the impetus of Thierry Manoncourt, Château Figeac has been producing a Second Wine since 1945 which, from the 2012 vintage, takes the name of a historic plot "Petit-Figeac" located in the heart of the estate.
The vintage
Despite significant rainfall, the mildness of the early year promotes an early bud break with a two-week lead before a frost episode on April 4 and 5 without impact on the vineyard thanks to the rigour of the teams. Subsequently, vegetative growth is homogeneous thanks to warm conditions punctuated by some rain. The almost tropical climate in June leads to high sanitary pressure, which is also controlled. A dry and sunny July precedes an August marked by heat peaks offset by salvific rainy episodes.
Vinification and ageing
The harvest is placed in a cold room before a rigorous sorting and gentle vinifications in the estate's new vat room. Controlled extraction. Slow and continuous fermentation. No use of sulphur. Ageing in oak barrels (including 30% new).
Blend
This Petit-Figeac 2023 is the result of a blend of Merlot (55%), Cabernet Franc (31%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (14%).
