Description
The elegance and aromatic palette of a Pommard wine by Olivier Leflaive
The producer
Established in Puligny-Montrachet since 1635, the Leflaive family has perpetuated the tradition of great Burgundy wines by offering one of the finest expressions of Chardonnay in the world. At the head of an unmissable estate in Burgundy, Olivier Leflaive has established himself as an emblematic figure of the Côte de Beaune. Olivier Leflaive was born in 1945 when his family owned a vineyard spread over about 20 hectares. After taking over the reins of the family business of the Leflaive estate, Olivier Leflaive founded Olivier Leflaive Frères in 1985, his own winemaking and ageing company, marking the birth of an "haute-couture" Burgundy wine merchant.
The vineyard
Patiently built up, the estate's vineyard now covers 17 hectares of vines located on the greatest terroirs of Burgundy. The house also buys grapes from the best winegrowers in the Côte de Beaune. In total, Olivier Leflaive has 120 hectares of vines to produce great white wines in the beautiful appellations of Puligny-Montrachet, Chassagne-Montrachet and Meursault, as well as in Chablis and the Côte Chalonnaise.
The wine
Olivier Leflaive's 2019 Pommard 1er cru "Pezerolles" takes its name from the historical owners of this terroir, the Pezerolles family. Located in the northern part of Pommard, this 5.91 hectare Premier Cru is south-east facing mid-slope, on brown limestone soils. Due to its altitude and good drainage, this vineyard, situated between 260 and 280 metres above sea level, benefits from ideal conditions to ensure an early and optimal ripening of the grapes. The vineyard was planted between 1959 and 1984.
The vinification and ageing
Hand-picked, the grapes are rigorously sorted in order to keep only the highest quality and the highest level of maturity. Total destemming. Alcohol fermentation in open vats. Vatting for 18 days. Aged for 17 months (including 5 months of mass blending) in oak barrels (30% new).
The blend
This Pommard 1er cru "Pezerolles" 2019 from Olivier Leflaive is a 100% Pinot Noir.
