Description
A great Bolgheri wine with a seductive complexity and finesse
The estate
The Grattamacco estate in Bolgheri, Tuscany, was founded in 1977. This "Super Tuscan" reference has been owned by the Bertarelli family since 2002. Grattamacco is one of the key references of the Bolgheri Superiore appellation and of fine Italian wines.
The wine
Grattamacco is a Tuscan wine made from vineyards situated at an altitude of between 100 and 200 metres on soils composed of calcareous sandstone, marl, calcareous flysch and white clay. This terroir benefits from a temperate Mediterranean climate with frequent sea breezes. The vines are 25 years old on average and are cultivated using environmentally friendly methods, favouring low yields and a high-quality production.
Vinification and ageing
The hand-picked grapes are rigorously sorted in order to keep only the finest berries. Fermentation is carried out in oak vats, along with manual punching down. Long maceration and slow extraction to release ripe and elegant tannins. The wine is aged for 18 months in oak barrels.
The vintage
The year 2019 was marked by a particularly hot summer, offset by a significant amount of rainfall recorded at the end of July, which helped to unblock the ripening process. The rainfall at the end of August/beginning of September preceded a milder period, with temperature variations between day and night, which accelerated ripening until the harvest.
The blend
Cabernet Sauvignon (65%)
Merlot (20%)
Sangiovese (15%).
