Description
A complex and structured La Rioja red wine
The estate
The history of CVNE or Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España began in 1879. This family winery was founded by two brothers in the Haro train station area of the Rioja region of Spain. The strategic location of the company allowed the marketing of the bodega's wines to flourish, facilitating the transport of wine barrels and bottling. Since then, the fifth generation has continued the family legacy, with the company now becoming one of Spain's leading wine groups. CVNE has a vineyard of 545 hectares spread over the areas of La Rioja Alta and La Rioja Alavesa with exceptional terroirs.
The vineyard
Viña Real Reserva is a La Rioja wine, made from grapes from Elciego and Laguardia. This wine comes from non-irrigated, goblet planted vines over 30 years old. The vineyard is planted on clay-limestone soil with little organic matter.
Winemaking and ageing
Pre-fermentation maceration is carried out cold. The alcoholic fermentation stage takes place in stainless steel vats, at a temperature maintained between 28°C and 30°C. The wine is aged in single-use French and American oak barrels. The maturation period lasts approximately 22 months. During this period, the wine is manually racked every 4 months during the first year of maturation. Before being released to the market, the wine is aged in the cellar for one and a half years.
The vintage
This year 2016 was marked by particularly dry summer temperatures. If this extreme climate had the effect of slowing down the development of the vineyard, it has also had the effect of limiting pressure on the vineyard. The harvested grapes were healthy and perfectly ripe.
