Description

A fruit-forward and balanced red wine from Saint-Estèphe

The property

With origins dating back to the 15th century, Château de Pez is one of the oldest properties in the Saint-Estèphe appellation. Once belonging to the Pontac family, founders of Château Haut-Brion, this estate on the left bank of Bordeaux was sold as a property of the state during the French Revolution. Since 1995, Château de Pez has been the property of the Louis Roederer Champagne House.

The vineyard

Château de Pez reigns over a 42 hectare vineyard, 38 of which are in production. The vines, 25 years old on average, are planted on gravel hills with a clay-limestone subsoil. Certified HVE (High Environmental Value) level 3, the vineyard is managed by means of sustainable viticultural techniques. 3 hectares are dedicated to the practice of biodynamics.

The vintage

The particularly mild winter favoured the early budding of the vines. The heat of April and May combined with heavy rainfall. Flowering was early and rapid. A cool and rainy June preceded a summer marked by drought and high temperatures. The rainy days in August were life-saving for the vineyard and ensured the gradual ripening of the grapes in time for the harvest. The grapes harvested were of high quality and the health of the vineyard was perfect.

Vinification and ageing

The harvested grapes are subjected to plot vinification in oak vats and thermoregulated tapered stainless steel vats. Use of 10% press wine. Ageing lasts 12 months in barrels (33% new).

The blend

The Château de Pez 2020 is made from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (51%), Merlot (43%), Cabernet Franc (3%) and Petit Verdot (3%).

The tasting

On the nose, aromas of iris, raspberry and cocoa bean precede a smooth and expressive palate. Notes of raspberry and cedar are supported by an ample and balanced palate, with a precise finish and delicate tannins.
