A rich and balanced Rioja red wine

The estate

Bodega Artadi was founded in 1985 by winemakers from the area around Logroño whose ambition is to produce fine wines from Rioja, a wine-growing area in the north of Spain.

Under the direction of the visionary oenologist Juan Carlos López de Lacalle since 1992, the bodega has rapidly gained international recognition. The quality of its wines has been recognised by many critics, notably Robert Parker, who has awarded the coveted 100/100 rating to several vintages.

The vineyard

Bodega Artadi reigns over an 80-hectare vineyard located in Laguardia, in the Rioja Alavesa. Located at 630 metres above sea level and made up of old, low-yielding but high-quality Tempranillo vines, the vineyard is managed using organic and biodynamic practices.

The wine

Viña El Pisón 2020 by Artadi is a Rioja wine made from a plot planted in 1945, on silty-limestone soil.

The vintage

The mild winter preceded a mild spring and a hot summer. The end of August was marked by a drop in temperature and a hailstorm that affected the vineyards to the south of Laguardia and Elvillar. The harvest of this 2020 vintage is 35% smaller than that of, for example, 2018.

Vinification and ageing

The hand-picked grapes are vinified in wooden vats with cold maceration for 24 to 48 hours. Fermentation for 10 to 12 days. This wine is aged for 9 months in French oak barrels.

The tasting

Nose
The lively and elegant nose gives off subtle fruity and minty fragrances.

Palate
The attack is silky and smooth. The mouthfeel gradually reveals its structure, its balance as well as its fine and persistent tannins.

Cellaring

This red wine can be cellared until 2040 to reveal its full aromatic range.
