The finesse and structure of a wine from Trentino Alto Adige, Italy
The property
Nestled in the heart of the Alpine valleys, Tenuta San Leonardo stretches along the banks of the Adige to the south of Trento in Italy. The Alps rise on either side of the vineyards that sit in this powerful and picturesque landscape. Very ancient, the origins of Tenuta San Leonardo date back to the 11th century. Founded in 1724, Tenuta San Leonardo is owned by the Marchesi Carlo Guerrieri Gonzaga family.
The vineyard
This Trentino Alto Adige estate spans nearly 300 hectares, including 30 of vineyards, located at altitudes between 150 and 200 meters. Merlot is planted on gravel-rich terroirs while cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, and carmenère are planted on sandier soils, with a neutral pH. The San Leonardo cuvée is made from vines aged 20 to 50 years.
The wine
This Alto Adige wine comes from vineyards located in the Cembra valley, at an altitude between 600 and 700 meters above sea level. The vines, aged 10 to 30 years, are planted on sandy-loamy soils.
San Leonardo has a long tradition linked to riesling. As early as 1892, at the wedding of Marquis Tullo Guerrieri Gonzaga and Gemma de Gresti, this wine was served, dressed in the same label as today.
Vinification and aging
After a brief cold maceration, fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at low temperatures for 20 to 25 days, thus preserving the freshness and aromas of the grape variety. The wine is then aged for 12 months on lees in 700-liter French oak barrels (of one and two wines), bringing complexity and structure while respecting the character of the grape variety.
