Description
The refinement and finesse of a Second Vin from Saint-Émilion
The property
A Premier Grand Cru Classé of Saint-Émilion, Château Figeac embodies the excellence of great Bordeaux wines around the world. Château Figeac has been owned by the Manoncourt family for over 120 years.
The vineyard
Château Figeac enjoys an exceptional location, to the west of the Saint-Émilion appellation, on the edge of the Pomerol appellation. The property's vineyard covers 40 hectares of vines and is planted on 3 different gravel hills. Respect for biodiversity, flora and fauna are at the heart of the property.
The wine
Produced with the same standards as the Grand Vin, Petit-Figeac is the Second Wine of Château Figeac. Under the leadership of Thierry Manoncourt, Château Figeac has produced a Second Vin since 1945 which, from the 2012 vintage, has taken the name of a historic "Petit-Figeac" plot located at the heart of the estate.
The vintage
A rainy autumn preceded a particularly hot and dry winter. The warm spring was counterbalanced by high humidity, conditions favourable for an early budding of the vines two weeks ahead of schedule. Cool and humid weather during April and May caused concern about the health of the vineyard. In mid-May, early flowering took place under very good conditions. While June was cool, summer conditions were hot and dry. The strategic choices in the management of the vineyard (light leaf stripping, shallow plowing, green harvest adapted to the potential of each vine) allowed for a gradual development of the vegetative cycle of each plot. Sufficient water reserves thanks to the spring rains protected the vineyard from water stress and helped to refine ripening. The grapes harvested were of high quality, combining aromatic freshness, texture and density.
The vinification and ageing
The vinification is carried out in barrels (30% new), as is the ageing for 12 to 15 months.
The blend
The Petit Figeac 2020 is made from a blend of Merlot (71%), Cabernet Franc (19%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (10%).
The tasting
The very elegant Petit-Figeac 2020 seduces with its roundness, refinement, expression of fruit and delicate tannins.
