Description
A refined and aromatic Basilicata red wine by Paternoster
The estate
Paternoster is a key reference among the finest Italian wine producers, a name often associated with the history of winegrowing on Mount Vultur in the south Italian region of Basilicata. Year after year, Paternoster has been recognized as one of the greatest names in Italian viticulture by the international press and critics, such as the Wine Spectator, the Wine Advocate and Gambero Rosso.
The vineyard
This 2016 Don Anselmo by the Paternoster estate is an Aglianico del Vulture wine that stems from a 4-hectare vineyard. The vines spread over the town of Barile, at the foot of Mount Vultur. The half-century-old vines are grown at an altitude of 600 metres and produce very low yields.
The wine
Paternoster's Don Anselmo celebrates the memory of the estate's founder. This wine embodies the perfect synergy between the roots and the estate's continuous winemaking tradition.
The vintage
2016 is a vintage known for its high quality. The hot spells had no impact on the vineyard and punctuated a regular climate and an even crop development. This vintage leads to the production of wines with balanced, expressive aromas sustained by fine tannins. A Basilicata wine in which balance and elegance prevail over power.
Vinification and ageing
Once the grapes are perfectly ripe, they are harvested by hand and then transferred to stainless steel vats for fermentation and skin maceration. These two processes take between 15 and 18 days and take place in temperature-controlled vats. The wine is then pumped over three times a day, followed by délestages. The wine is aged for 24 months in Slavonian oak barrels (50%) and French oak barrels (50%). After bottling, the 2016 Don Anselmo is aged for a further 12 months before being released.
The blend
Aglianico (100%). This black grape variety is iconic in this region and is the source of the Aglianico del Vulture Superiore DOCG appellation.
