Description
A silky Ribera del Duero red wine with a rich aromatic palette by Pago de los Capellanes
The estate
Bodega Pago de los Capellanes was founded in 1996 by the Rodero Villa family, who wished to produce fine Ribera del Duero wines.
The Bodega watches over a renowned vineyard in the heart of the Castilla y León region, which benefits from ideal weather conditions that ensure the optimal and gradual ripening of the grapes.
Fresh, refined and intensely aromatic, the wines by Pago de los Capellanes, recently announced as one of the world's top 100 wineries by the Wine & Spirits magazine, are the pure and delicate expression of the richness and potential of these fine Spanish terroirs.
The vineyard
This El Picon 2016 wine by Pago de los Capellanes is made from a 1.6-hectare plot. Located in the village of Pedrosa de Duero, this vineyard is situated on a clay-silt soil.
The vintage
The winter was mild and relatively dry. The beginning of spring was marked by cool, wet conditions that delayed budburst. The hot weather in June and July favoured both the vegetative development and ripening of the grapes. Upon harvesting, the grapes were perfectly ripe and balanced.
The vinification and ageing
The harvested grapes are kept in a cold room for 24 hours. Cold maceration for 6 days. Alcoholic fermentation in small French oak tanks with selected wild yeasts. Spontaneous malolactic fermentation, carried out in barrels, is accompanied by regular stirring of the lees. The wine is aged for 22 months in 225 litre French oak barrels.
