Description
The richness and aromatic complexity of a Piedmont wine by Mauro Molino
The estate
Mauro Molino decided to found his own estate in the early 1980s in La Morra, an iconic village in Piedmont. Dedicated to the cultivation of his vineyard and always striving for excellence, Mauro Molino has successfully brought fine Barolo and Barbera d'Alba Superiore wines to life, wines that have earned him an international reputation. Mauro Molino's Italian wines are true vintages, made from meticulously delimited "single vineyards", which translate the typical characteristics of the original terroir in which they thrived.
The vineyard
The estate's 12-hectare vineyard, situated in the heart of the Italian Langhe region, is planted exclusively with the Nebbiolo and Barbera grape varieties.
The wine
Mauro Molino's 2018 La Serra is a Piedmont wine that stems from a vineyard situated in one the Barolo appellation's most renowned terroirs. Overlooking the village of La Morra, this vineyard benefits from a high altitude (400 metres) as well as a south-east exposure, conditions that greatly contribute to the signature style of this wine that harmoniously combines sophistication and elegance. The old vines are 55 years old on average and are planted on clay-limestone soils.
The vintage
The 2018 vintage benefited from ideal weather conditions throughout the year. While the heavy rainfall ensured sufficient water reserves, the mild temperatures favoured the optimal vegetative development and even ripening of the grapes. The grapes harvested in the middle of October were perfectly healthy and showcased a perfect balance between acidity and sugar.
Vinification and ageing
Harvested by hand at optimum ripeness, the grapes remain in contact with the skins for 14 days. Alcoholic and malolactic fermentation in stainless steel tanks. The wine is aged for 18 months in oak barrels followed by a further year of bottle ageing.
The blend
Nebbiolo (100%).
