Description
A Barolo wine that harmoniously combines power and aromatic finesse
The estate
Located in the Barolo area, the Marchesi di Barolo estate dates back to 1810, when it was owned by Marquis Falletti. Belonging to the Abbona family for five generations, Marchesi di Barolo is renowned well beyond the Italian borders for the quality and elegance of its Piedmont wines.
The vineyard
This Barolo Sarmassa Limited Edition 10 Years 2010 by Marchesi di Barolo is made from the eponymous vineyard. Facing south-east on a sloping hillside and resting on stony soil, the Samassa terroir is unique due to its clay-limestone subsoil which, by limiting the vegetative development, ensures the optimal ripeness of the grapes.
The vintage
The winter was particularly cold and was marked by abundant snowfall, guaranteeing significant water reserves in the soil. The mild weather in April and May favoured the crop development. The variation between warm days and cool nights from the middle of August onwards was ideal in helping to refine the ripening process.
The vinification and ageing
Following the harvest, the grapes are gently pressed and destemmed. Fermentation in temperature-controlled tanks. Maceration for 10 days. Malolactic fermentation then racking. The wine is aged for two years, partly in 30 and 35 hectolitre Slavonian oak barrels and partly in small 225 litre French oak barrels. Following the blending in large traditional oak casks, further ageing in bottles is carried out before being put on the market.
