Description
A Saint-Julien Second Wine with a seductive smoothness and freshness
The estate
With wines that achieve, vintage after vintage, greater heights of excellence and elegance, Château Léoville Las Cases is today one of the most iconic properties of the prestigious Saint-Julien appellation, located on the left bank of the Bordeaux region.
The vineyard
A benchmark among Saint-Julien wines, Château Léoville Las Cases watches over a 55-hectare vineyard which is planted within the famous Clos de Léoville, the complexity of which constitutes a veritable mosaic of terroirs. Located near the Gironde estuary, the vineyard benefits from the river's role as a thermal regulator, guaranteeing mild temperatures and providing a barrier against frost. Combined with the presence of gravelly soils from the Günz, resting on subsoils of a gravelly-sandy nature with more or less deep clays, the terroir of Château Léoville Las Cases brings together all the conditions necessary to produce legendary and alluring vintages.
The wine
Le Petit Lion du Marquis de Las Cases first produced in 2007. The Second Wine of Château Léoville Las Cases, Le Petit Lion du Marquis de Las Cases is vinified from parcels of vines located in the Clos Léoville Las Cases. Following in the footsteps of its two predecessors, Le Petit Lion du Marquis de Las Cases is vinified and aged with the same care as the other wines of the estate. With a higher proportion of Merlot in the blend, Le Petit Lion du Marquis de Las Cases is more accessible in its youth.
The vintage
Marked by an early budburst, 2021 is also marked by a late grape harvest compared to recent vintages. The diligent and knowledgeable teams at the estate were able to assess the vineyard throughout the growing season. Despite the unstable weather conditions, the grapes harvested showcased a high quality and homogeneous maturity levels.
The blend
Merlot (57%), Cabernet Sauvignon (40%), and Cabernet Franc (3%).
