Description
The aromatic richness and sophistication of a red wine from Graves
The estate
A neighbour of the illustrious Château Haut-Brion, Château La Mission Haut-Brion has served for centuries as one of the most iconic references of Bordeaux. Founded in the 16th century by the Lestonnac family, the property was then managed by the Lazarist priests. Now belonging to the Clarence Dillon estates and Prince Robert of Luxembourg, Château La Mission Haut-Brion continues to shine as one the greatest châteaux in the world.
The wine
A rare wine produced in very limited quantities, La Chapelle de la Mission Haut-Brion is the Second Wine of the property. This exclusive wine is a superb introduction to the Château La Mission Haut-Brion style. La Chapelle de la Mission Haut-Brion takes its name from the Lazarist priests of the Mission who have cultivated the vine on the estate since the 18th century.
The vineyard
Situated in the municipalities of Talence and Pessac, Château la Mission Haut-Brion is classified in the Pessac-Léognan appellation. The vineyard of Château La Mission Haut-Brion covers 29 hectares of vines, 25 of which are dedicated to red grape varieties and 4 to white grape varieties. The vineyards of Château de La Mission Haut-Brion are planted in beautiful gravelly soils upon a subsoil of clay, sand, limestone and faluns (a shell limestone).
The vintage
While winter and spring were marked by heavy rainfall, drought set in at the beginning of summer. The operations of the teams at the château were limited so as to protect the vines from the sun. Even though maturity was very early, these high temperatures, accompanied by a significant water deficit, slowed down vine growth and tempered its advance. Through picking the grapes only in the mornings and transport to the wine cellar being refrigerated, the harvests preserved the fully ripe aroma of the harvested grapes. The 2020 vintage unveiled concentrated and beautifully fresh wines.
Blend
La Chapelle de La Mission Haut-Brion 2020 is made of a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (55.3%) and Merlot (44.7%).
Tasting
Colour
The wine is a beautiful, dark garnet colour.
Nose
The nose initially seduces with its intense aromas of red and black fruits. Raspberry and blackberry notes develop at aeration, highlighted by subtle, woody notes.
Palate
Opulent, the attack precedes a palate with a fruity and juicy tannic structure. Moderately long, the finish seduces with its aromas of freshly picked fruit and spices. Throughout the tasting process, the Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon interact with harmony and delicacy.
