The estate
Kloster Eberbach is an illustrious German wine institution. A former Cistercian monastery located in the heart of the Rheingau wine region, Kloster Eberbach has been producing wine for almost nine centuries. As a member of the prestigious Verband Deustcher Prädikats (VDP), this estate is one of the largest and most prestigious wine producers in Germany.
The vineyard
Kloster Eberbach's Riesling Rauenthaler Baiken Crescentia Spätlese 2004 is a Rheingau wine that stems from the Baiken vineyard. The vineyard is located near the village of Rauenthaler and has been cultivated since the 13th century. The nutrient-poor soils composed of phyllite, quartz and slate are very famous in the northern part of the Rheingau region. The term "baiken" comes from the German word "Biegen" meaning "to bend". The vineyards are located on very steep and curved slopes with an over 60-degree incline.
Vinification and ageing
Rauenthaler Baiken Crescentia Riesling Spätlese by Kloster Eberbach is a Riesling Spätlese. It is produced from a slightly late grape harvest in October. At this time of the year, the grapes were able to develop noble rot, which thus increasing their sugar concentration.
