The intensity and balance of a Basilicata red wine

The estate

In 1960, Generoso Fucci acquired a 6-hectare vineyard on the slopes of an extinct volcano, Mount Vulture. The grapes were sold, while the family kept some vines for their own enjoyment. In 2000, following the decision to sell the family estate, Elena Fucci decided to take over the vineyard in order keep this family treasure. While studying oenology, Elena Fucci founded her own estate. Today, Azienda Agricola Fucci is one of the finest references of the Basilicata region, in the south of Italy.

The vineyard

In the north of the Basilicata region, Elena Fucci's 6-hectare vineyard sits at the foot of Mount Vulture. Located 600 metres above sea level on a lava and ash flow, the vineyard lies on mineral-rich volcanic soil. The 70-year-old vines benefit from an ideal microclimate which enables them to reveal their full potential through fine Basilicata wines.

The vinification and ageing

Depending on the weather conditions, the manual harvests begins either at the end of October or beginning of November. The grapes are taken to the cellar where they are fermented in stainless steel tanks. After racking, the must is put into 200 litre barrels (50% of which are new) for malolactic fermentation. The 12-month ageing period is completed by an additional 12 months of bottle ageing before being put on the market.

The blend

Aglianico (100%). The region’s iconic black grape variety is used to produce monovarietal wines in the Aglianico del Vulture DOC appellation.

The tasting

Colour

Intense ruby colour with subtle garnet hues.

Nose

Full and complex, the nose combines fruity (cherry, redcurrant) and spicy fragrances with tasty notes of rosemary, tobacco and cinnamon with a beautiful mineral elements.

Palate

This wine seduces the palate with its structure, its intense aromatic expression and its long finish.

Service

For an optimal tasting experience, we recommend decanting this wine 30 minutes before serving, enjoy between 16-18°C.
