Description
The refinement and aromatic expression of a Châteauneuf-du-Pape red wine
The producer
Acquired in 1905 by the Daumen family, the Domaine de la Vieille Julienne has experienced unprecedented growth since 1990, when Jean-Paul Daumen joined the family estate.
Passionate about his terroir, this man developed the ecological management of this vineyard by limiting chemical treatments and no longer using chemical products thus, favouring biodynamics.
Through the quality and aromatic range of its wines, Domaine de la Vieille Julienne has become, over the years, an essential Rhône Valley wine reference.
The wine
The 2017 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Hauts-Lieux by Domaine de la Vieille Julienne is the fruit of both a natural approach to winemaking and an exceptional terroir. The vines are around 70 years old and this 2.8-hectare Demeter certified vineyard is managed according to the precepts of biodynamic winemaking. The soil is made up of quartzite pebbles, red clay and rare yellow sands.
The vinification and ageing
The hand-picked grapes are sorted twice, in the vineyard and in the cellar. The vinification is carried out using wild yeasts, without sulphur. Vatting for 20 days followed by a light extraction. The wine is aged for one year in oak tuns, followed by a further 6 months in bottle.
The blend
This 2017 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Hauts-Lieux by Domaine de la Vieille Julienne is made up of Grenache (65%), Mourvèdre (20%) and Counoise and Cinsault (15%).
Service
For an optimal tasting experience, serve between 16 and 18°C.
Storage
This Rhône Valley red wine can be kept in the cellar until around 2037 in order to reveal its full aromatic range.
