Description
A unique Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux red wine by Clos Puy Arnaud
The estate
"Puy Arnaud’s Cru produces one of the most sought-after wines in the region", as described in the Guide Féret book in 1898, a reference regarding Bordeaux wines since 1868.
A member of the board of Château Pavie since 1979, Thierry Valette acquired Clos Puy Arnaud in 2000. Since 2005, the vineyard has been managed using organic (AB) and biodynamic (Demeter and Biodyvin) practices, resulting in Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux wines that are renowned for their elegance.
Clos Puy Arnaud watches over a 15-hectare vineyard as well as 3 hectares in the Libourne region. While the three main grape varieties grown are Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, a massal selection including Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Mancin, Sastets and Sauvignon Blanc is being worked on.
The vineyard
The 2019 Clos Puy Arnaud is made from vines that are approximately 30 years old. Located between 90 and 100 metres above sea level, less than two kilometres away from Saint-Émilion, this terroir is planted on clay-limestone soils, giving this wine an elegant, fresh and mineral expression.
Vinification and ageing
Whole berries are gravity-fed into wooden and concrete vats. Cold pre-fermentation maceration with inert gas followed by a natural fermentation at low temperature. The wine is aged for 6 months, 1/3 in barrels (15% of which are new), 1/3 in demi-muids and 1/3 in jars. The blending of this wine is carried out in uncoated concrete tanks for 3 months.
The blend
Merlot (70%)
Cabernet Franc (25%)
Cabernet Sauvignon (5%)
