The estate
It was in 2008 that the Cuvelier family, already owners of Clos Fourtet, Premier Grand Cru Classé of Saint-Émilion, acquired the Château Poujeaux. Since then, the beautiful Médoc property has experienced a real renaissance. Led by Mathieu Cuvelier and Christophe Labenne with vinifications carried out under the advice of consulting oenologist Stéphane Derenoncourt, the Château Poujeaux stands out among the most beautiful references of the Moulis appellation, on the left bank of Bordeaux.
The vineyard
Château Poujeaux is a Moulis wine from a 72-hectare vineyard in one piece located northeast of the appellation. The 30-year-old vines on average benefit from an exceptional location on the Günzian Graves slopes. This great terroir perfectly benefits the Médoc grape varieties. From this terroir-variety match, great wines typical of the Moulis appellation are born, between density and elegance.
The vintage
A relatively mild and wet winter precedes a rainy March before frosts in early April. Starting with mild conditions alternating with rainy episodes, spring gradually gives way to higher temperatures, as well as the level of rainfall, until the beginning of summer. If the flowering is homogeneous, the stormy episode of July 7 impacts the vineyard by 25%. The few heatwaves recorded during the summer promote the concentration of the berries, while preserving a beautiful freshness.
Vinification and ageing
Fermentation of whole berries in stainless steel, wood and thermo-regulated concrete vats. Extraction by pumping over. Maceration of 20 to 25 days. Ageing for 12 months in barrels (30% new and 70% one and two wines).
Blend
Cabernet Sauvignon (55%)
Merlot (35%)
Petit Verdot (10%).
