Description

The subtlety of a Saint-Émilion Premier Grand Cru Classé

The estate
Château Pavie Macquin was founded in the 19th century by Albert Macquin, the man who introduced grafted vines to France in order to save the country's vineyards from the destruction caused by phylloxera. Today, the estate still belongs to the descendants of Albert Macquin. This Premier Grand Cru Classé of Saint-Émilion is an essential reference of the appellation and is one of the greatest wines in the world.

The vineyard
Château Pavie Macquin extends over 15 hectares in clay-limestone soils on the plateau of limestone rocks in Saint-Emilion on the right bank of Bordeaux.

The vintage
The 2019 vintage was characterised by contrasting climatic conditions. The heat of the summer was tempered by a few rainy days, delivering very ripe Merlot and fresh Cabernet, whose blend offers a beautiful aromatic complexity.

The winemaking
Manual harvest. Gravity vatting of the fruit and plot-by-plot vinification in oak and concrete tanks.

The ageing
Ageing from 16 to 20 months. Reductive ageing on fine lees. 1st racking after 6 to 10 months of ageing, the second a year later, before bottling. Fining and filtration only if necessary.

The blend
Merlot (78%), cabernet franc (20%), cabernet sauvignon (2%).

The tasting
Tasted en primeur, the Pavie Macquin 2019 promises to be a very great vintage for the property. Thanks to the thermal amplitudes at the end of the season, the vintage has retained an exceptional freshness, showcasing bright and expressive fruit.
