Description

A fine and elegant red wine from Saint-Estèphe

The estate

Founded in the 18th century, Château Ormes de Pez is located in the Médoc, in the appellation of Saint-Estèphe. Owned by the Cazes family since 1940, Château Ormes de Pez has undergone major renovations and modernisations. The estate takes its name from the word "pez" meaning "peace" in the local dialect, also meaning the elm trees that once were found on the estate before this variety died out in Europe. The wines of Château Ormes de Pez are produced with the same care and attention as those of the Pauillac Cru Classé Château Lynch-Bages, which also belongs to the Cazes family. Reflecting the typical style of Saint-Estèphe, the wines of Château Ormes de Pez combine generous and bright fruit with a fleshy texture and powerful material, promising a very good ageing potential.

The vineyard

Located to the north of the town of Saint-Estèphe, the Château Ormes de Pez vineyard covers 40 hectares of vines planted on two distinct terroirs. Here, we find the famous “Garonnaise gravel” in gravelly plots with quartz and rolled pebble soils. The terroir of Château Ormes de Pez is also marked by the presence of clay-sandy plots, which are cooler. The vines are 35 years old on average and the grape varieties of the property reflect the winemaking tradition of the Médoc.

The vintage

While the winter was marked by heavy rainfall, the mild weather during the spring favoured the development of the vines. Despite a few rainy days and a drop in temperatures at the end of April, the vineyard cycle was 3 weeks ahead of schedule. The good climatic conditions of May favoured an even flowering. The dry and sunny summer was characterised by great thermal amplitudes, ensuring the optimal ripening of the grapes. In mid-August, some stormy days helped the fruit ripen. The hot, dry conditions that followed allowed for the harvest of small, perfectly concentrated grapes.

Vinification and ageing

The wine was aged for a period of 16 months in oak barrels, of which 45% were new oak barrels.

The blend

The Château Ormes de Pez 2020 was made from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (38%), Merlot (54%), Cabernet Franc (4%) and Petit Verdot (4%).
