Description
The richness and depth of a balanced and powerful fine red wine from Bordeaux
The estate
Boasting a vineyard whose quality of land for the cultivation of the vine has been recognised in local archives dating back to 1461, Château Haut-Bailly has quite a prestigious heritage. Earning the title of Classified Growth of Graves in 1953, Château Haut-Bailly turned a new page in its history following its acquisition by Robert G. Wilmers in 1998. Passionate about Bordeaux and its wines, this great patron and lover of French culture worked alongside his wife to perpetuate the historical heritage of Château Haut-Bailly. He took an innovative and modern approach to elevate the wines of the estate to the highest level of quality before his death in December 2017. General Manager of the property, Véronique Sanders works with Technical director Gabriel Vialard to manage this iconic Pessac-Léognan estate with plenty of talent and passion.
The vineyard
Situated at the top of a hill in Graves, Château Haut-Bailly watches over 30 hectares of vines spread over gravel, clay and sand soils. The gentle slopes of the hill promote excellent soil drainage.
The vintage
2019 will be remembered at Château Haut-Bailly as being a year with unprecedented weather. After a short and mild winter, the early bud burst of the vines was threatened by episodes of spring frost. Nevertheless, the technical teams of the estate fought back and protected the vines from low temperatures. The summer brought high temperatures and heat waves. Thanks to the hot days and the cool nights, the ripening of the berries occurred with perfect consistency. The harvest at Château Haut-Bailly began on September 23 and ended on October 11. The generous harvest revealed fruit with great phenolic richness and a good concentration of sugars, as well as good acidity levels.
The blend
Cabernet sauvignon (56%), merlot (36%), cabernet franc (4%), petit verdot (4%).
The tasting
Tasted as a wine future, the Château Haut-Bailly 2019 is already showing a superb maturity and a beautiful aromatic expression. On the palate, the wine offers a precise expression of its terroir, a nice depth of matter and power. The blend highlights the charm of Merlot and the structure of Cabernet.
