Description
A seductive Premier Grand Cru Classé of Sauternes with fine and rich aromas
The estate
"La Maison Noble du Bayle" is the historic name of Château Guiraud, from when it was owned by the Mons de Saint Poly family. In 1766 Bordeaux merchant Pierre Guiraud bought the estate. In the 80 years and three generations that followed, Guiraud has become a prestigious name and classified as a First Growth of Sauternes in the 1855 Classification.
The vineyard
Château Giraud boasts an exceptional 128-hectare vineyard, planted in gravelly sand and gravelly clay soils. The vineyard has been conducted in organic since 1996 and certified since 2011.
The wine
In 2011, Château Guiraud was the first Premier Grand Cru Classé of 1855 to earn the organic farming certification. The 2020 vintage celebrates this tenth anniversary.
The vintage
A damp and warm autumn preceded a dry winter, the mildness of which favoured early bud burst. The spring frost partially affected some plots and the significant rainfall required an increased vigilance by the estate teams in order to preserve the quality of the grapes. The hot, dry summer allowed for an optimal, gradual ripening of the berries.
Vinification and ageing
The harvest took place during the month of September, as it was impossible in October due to continuous rain. The ripe fruit revealed beautiful, fresh aromas. Harvested manually, the grapes were rigorously sorted three times to keep only the grapes of optimal quality. This thorough selection process and the climatic conditions of the spring resulted in a low yield of high-quality fruit in 2020. The 3 to 6 week fermentation took place in oak barrels, 90% of which were of new oak and 10% oak of one previous wine. Ageing in barrels took place for 18 to 24 months.
The blend
The Château Guiraud 2020 is made from a blend of Sémillon (65%) and Sauvignon Blanc (35%).
The tasting
The Château Guiraud 2020 seduces with its tension and purity. A silky touch combines with great finesse to produce fresh and spicy aromas, as well as fruity notes (quince and apricots).
The service
For optimal tasting, serve the Château Guiraud 2020 at a temperature of 9-10 °C.
