Description
The great style of a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé further enhanced by a great vintage
The estate
Located near the Premier Crus Clos Fourtet and Beau-Sejour Bécot, Château Grand-Pontet has belonged to the Pourquet-Becot family since 1980. Managed by Sylvie Pourquet-Bécot, this magnificent Grand Cru Classé of Saint-Émilion is situated on an exceptional limestone terroir and enjoys an international reputation for its very successful wines, which delight even the choosiest connoisseurs of the appellation.
The vineyard
Located on a plateau on the western side of Saint-Émilion, the Château Grand-Pontet vineyard covers an area of 14 hectares, including 12.72 hectares of vines in production. The vines are 42 years old on average and are planted in thin soils resting on limestone, clay-limestone and clay-sandy bases. The vineyard is managed through a biocontrol process. The grape varieties are dominated by Merlot (70%), complemented by Cabernet Franc (17.5%), Cabernet Sauvignon (7.5%) and Malbec (5%).
The vinification and ageing
After the manual harvest, which took place from September 21 to September 30 with a thorough selection of the best grapes directly on the vineyard, the grapes arrive at the cellar to be sorted a second time. The berries pass through a vibrating table located at the entrance to the cellar. The harvest is destemmed but not crushed, and the extraction is gentle, taking place at a moderate temperature. The grapes ferment in vats for a period of 30 days at a temperature between 22 and 28 degrees. Finally, the wine ages in 30% new barrels.
The blend
Merlot (77.50%), Cabernet Franc (17.50%) and Malbec (5%).
